To truly understand Texas Freedom Academy, you must first set aside traditional ideas of what school looks like. Our model is unlike any other, making it difficult to fit neatly into conventional definitions. At our core, we are a community of independent learners operating within a homeschool framework. The “freedom” in Texas Freedom Academy isn’t just part of our name – it’s one of our guiding principles. We believe the family is central to a student’s life and education. That’s why we offer the flexibility and personalization of homeschooling, combined with the guidance of experienced educators typically found in traditional schools. Our individualized curriculum allows students to progress at their own pace; whether that means working ahead in some subjects or receiving extra support in others. At Texas Freedom Academy, students never have to wait to catch up or slow down; they move forward on a path that fits them.

Curriculum
We’re often asked what kind of curriculum we use, and answering that is a bit like asking a homeschooler what grade they’re in. Every student at Texas Freedom Academy receives a fully customized curriculum based on an individual assessment. For some students, his might mean using a structured, literature-based program like Sonlight. For other students, it may be a mix of various curriculum and methods to match the students learning style and interests. If a student loves dinosaurs that year, their curriculum is going to include dinosaurs for reading assignments, projects, art, history, science, and maybe even a little dinosaur themed math to keep them engaged and interested. We have the freedom to meet a student where they are in life and interests, and build a learning program as unique as they are.

Private School – Totally Re-Imagined
Before COVID-19, we had a typical school building with many students together and a Monday – Thursday schedule. But in March 2020, like all public and private schools in Texas, we were ordered to close by the state. We reimagined school once again, and came up with a plan that allowed us to continue to teach without any disruptions to our school year.

Refusing to compromise the education of our students, we spent the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year spending individual time with each student.  What we discovered is when you pair a professional educator with a student in a dedicated time slot, use custom curriculum created exactly for that student, amazing things can happen. We were able to accomplish an entire school day of instruction in just a few hours, and each student excelled and actually advanced faster through their studies with better retention. We saw students that were previously slower learners, especially students with social challenges or learning difficulties, excel rapidly with this more individualized model. When we were able to return to our school building in 2021, we faced a pivotal decision: return to the group model and serve more students, or commit fully to this new, more impactful approach. We chose impact over size. Today, we continue with our Monday–Thursday schedule, maintaining a low student-to-teacher ratio—no more than 5:1, often 2:1 or even one-on-one. By eliminating distractions like classroom changes, lunch, recess, or waiting for the class to catch up, we’ve found that focused, individualized learning in a calm environment achieves far more in less time – and supports each child exactly where they are.

School Schedule
School runs Monday – Thursday, 8:30am-11:45am.

At Texas Freedom Academy, we believe family time is foundational to a child’s growth and well-being. That’s why we support families in spending meaningful time together, whether it’s taking a trip during the off-season or simply enjoying unhurried evenings at home. Our flexible model allows families to pause academics to travel or connect when it’s most enjoyable, without the stress of falling behind. In fact, we can tailor your child’s learning plan to include topics related to any upcoming travel you may have, making the experience more educational and memorable. Because our students engage deeply during school hours, we don’t assign homework. This gives families more freedom, less pressure, and more time together.

Our school year runs September (after Labor Day) until mid-May so families are able to spend as much time together as possible. If a family decides to take a vacation (or has a family emergency) during the school year, we work with them to adapt their individual learning program during or after the event. Because each student’s plan is unique to them, we simply pause and pick back up where they left off – with custom education plans for each student, they never “fall behind the class.”

Environment
Our environment reflects the same unique approach as our educational philosophy. Above all, safety and security are our highest priorities. With a strong background in law enforcement and physical security, we are deeply committed to creating a space where every student feels protected and cared for. We believe meaningful learning can only take place when both students and their families feel confident in the safety of the environment.

Even when we were in our previous larger school building, we had a “home” environment without traditional classrooms full of desks and a teacher in front of the class. Teaching now takes place in smaller rooms or our library, with floor to ceiling bookshelves full of books and a study table in the middle. Some students may need a desk for math, but enjoy reading on a bean bag and enjoy working on history while laying on a super soft rug on the floor. Texas Freedom Academy has evolved into an amazing place where learning takes place on the individual level with shorter school days and dedicated instruction with their teacher.

Dress Code
Tired of looking at pages of detailed dress codes or uniforms? At Texas Freedom Academy, we keep it simple. Our dress code requires only that your belly and bottom remain covered. We want to take the stress out of your mornings, so whether your child wakes up late and wants to wear pajamas or is in the mood for a superhero costume and cape, we embrace their individuality. Some battles just aren’t worth fighting – your child can come to school as they are.

Give someone a fish, and you feed them for a day.
Teach them how to fish, and you feed them for a lifetime.
That old saying about fishing captures our education philosophy. We don’t just teach kids what they need to know to be successful in college and pass tests, we teach them HOW to learn. We provide a student with independence and instill the desire to learn and teach them where to find the resources they need. When they want to learn about a subject, they will learn where to go for that education. Perhaps they can learn from YouTube or the internet. Perhaps they need to seek a mentor or read some books. Perhaps they need a formal class or certification course. We impart the confidence to know how to learn and gain skills.

Our Founders
Texas Freedom Academy was founded by Troy and Kari Marrs, who were both born Texans and spent five years living in Wyoming before deciding to return closer to family. Before making the move, they embraced an extraordinary adventure: selling nearly everything they owned, purchasing an RV, and traveling across the country with their three daughters, then ages 7, 9, and 11. That year on the road was an unforgettable educational journey, filled with visits to historic landmarks and national parks. After their travels, they settled in the Cypress area and soon launched their own family business.

About Kari (Teacher, Education Director):
Kari has loved learning from the time she was very young and wanted to be a teacher since she was in the second grade. At the age of 15, she applied and was accepted to attend a new early college entrance school and was in the 5th graduating class of the Texas Academy of Math and Science located at the University of North Texas. Afterwards, she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education (with a mathematics specialty) from East Texas Baptist University. She has taught in public school and has spent 14 years homeschooling her own children. She is a certified educator, holding a current Texas teaching certificate. Kari not only loves teaching, she also loves learning herself and is currently working on a dual Masters degree program through East Texas Baptist University.

About Troy (Administration, Safety & Security):
Some of Troy’s accomplishments/jobs include: volunteer firefighter, paramedic, police officer / state trooper, army veteran (military police), physical security expert, private pilot, entrepreneur / business owner, children’s pastor. He has discovered over the years how to find the resources to learn whatever he dreamed of doing. He is a master of having a dream and figuring out a way to make it happen. He also helps place high school foreign exchange students in host families here in the US, and is the national student support services director of a U.S. State Department designated sponsor organization tasked with administering the high school student exchange program here in the USA. This has given the family even greater opportunities to travel as they go and visit students around the world that have stayed in their own home.
